Outdoor working conditions in New England could get cold and wet, so some footwear was needed that would be up to the task. The younger Swartz devised a waterproof boot because it was needed for comfort and, ultimately, safety. When the company introduced the Timberland boot in 1973, the footwear became so popular that the business changed its name to Timberland.
